Putting Christ back in Christmas

A look at the meaning of Christmas, behind the lights, the trees, and the presents. Following the traditional readings of “carol and lessons” services normally held Christmas Eve, this study will explore the biblical story of the first Christmas, as found in scripture.

We invite you to join us Thursday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., or Thursday evenings from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary to rediscover the true meaning of the holidays. Everyone is welcome to come. Bring a friend, or bring your family!

Note: “Schedule Bookmarks” are also available on the Narthex & Foyer tables.

Advent Newsletter

Just  in…. Please note that the submission deadline for our Advent newsletter is week Sunday, November 8th. Please make every effort to have your submissions in by this date. Submissions should be sent to: calvin@written-in-faith.net. Note: Please do not send submissions to Gerianne’s personal e-mail, to help streamline the publication of the newsletter.

Recycling

Please remember that recycling needs to be a priority at Calvin. We had a visit and inspection by the city’s Recycling Department. Doing the bit we do for recycling, they let us of the hook for now, but they could force us to buy 4 big garbage bins, (that you see  everywhere now.) Then we would have to PAY someone to pick up garbage, which we can not afford.

Sunday School

Our Sunday School is asking for donations of instruments, such as bongo drums, maracas, triangles, and tambourines – any percussion instruments really. If anyone has such things collecting dust in their basements, we would greatly appreciate the chance to shine them up and use them to add a little flare to the music program for the children. We are especially looking for bongos because the young adults in the Youth Group who are not comfortable singing will be more apt to participate if they have such an instrument to play. Feel free to contact any of the Sunday School leaders or members of the Christian Education Committee, if you are able to help out.

Plum Puddings

The Ladies Guild of St Davids is again offering their tasty and filling Plum Puddings for the Christmas Season.  Cost is $9.00 per lb and most puddings will be in the $8-18.00 range.  Orders are being taken now by Barbara Service   who will coordinate delivery.

The Face of Poverty Consultation will sponsor an interfaith church service at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Dartmouth, on Sunday, November 22nd, at 7:00 p.m. The speaker will be Pauline Raven.  The Shining Lights Choir (made up of street people) will take part in the service. This service marks the 20th Anniversary of the unanimous adoption in the Canadian House of Commons of the resolution to achieve the elimination of child poverty in Canada by the year 2000. (The Face of Poverty is an interfaith coalition working to eliminate poverty.)
